The North Carolina Archives house Principal Annual Reports from high schools around the state. The Division of Negro Education began in 1913 as the office of the Associate Supervisor of Rural Elementary Schools with the responsibility for promoting Negro education. In 1917 the title of the position was changed to State Agent for Negro Schools. The work was supported until 1921 by the Rosenwald Fund and by the General Education Board. However, in 1921, the General Assembly created the Division of Negro Education; thereafter the work of the division was funded by state appropriations. The division was incorporated into the Division of Instructional Services , Department of Public Instruction in 1960, and it ceased to exist as a separate entity in 1961.
In December 2014, I (Julie Hawks) visited the archives and photographed all of the pages for each report from the three African American high schools in Stanly County (Badin, Kingville, and Norwood) between 1924 and 1968 when Stanly County public schools were integrated. Over 800 images now need to be converted into PDFs to be posted on this website.
