History in the Making

New Exhibit – Mills of Stanly County

Stanly County Museum’s current exhibit is about the textile mills of Stanly County. Beginning in 1897 when Efird Mills opened their doors, this exhibit follows the rise and fall of the textile mills. Artifacts on display include the steam whistles from Wiscassett Mills, photographs of early 19th century mill worker children, a Wiscassett Mills baseball jersey, an early 19 th century knitting machine, and much more. Whenever possible, quotes from mill workers themselves are used to tell their story. This exhibit will remain on display into January 2020.
